Daniil Medvedev may well be a dark horse to once again go deep at the 2026 Australian Open.

The Russian had an ‘annus horribilis’ in majors last year but looks to have found some of his old Mojo here.

The three-time runner-up at Melbourne Park has looked sharp and confident so far, following up a straight sets win over Jesper de Jong with a 6-7 6-3 6-4 6-2 success over Quentin Halys.

Up next, it’s a third career encounter with Fabian Marozsan, who is no stranger to producing an upset and has been very solid in wins over Arthur Rinderknech and Kamil Majchrzak.

The world number 47 will need to achieve something he’s never done before to oust Medvedev, however, having failed to take a set off the former world number one in two previous meetings.

Medvedev was too strong at the 2024 US Open and was also dominated at Almaty last year. Indeed, Daniil evidently likes the match-up and appears to be playing the big points far better again this year, having lost his way a bit, so it’s hard to make a case for anything other than the Russian stretching his impressive record at this tournament to 31-9.
