Daniil Medvedev vs Alexander Zverev prediction

Daniil Medvedev mounted a spirited comeback against Lorenzo Sonego to make it through to the last eight. Sonego was the better player in the first set and deservedly took the lead, with the second going on serve. The former world number one produced a brilliant winner at 5-5 in the tiebreak and went on to level the match up. He broke the Sonego serve in the third and served it out to win 3-6 7-6 (5) 6-4.

Alexander Zverev continued the defence of his title with a mostly straight-forward win over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The world number three breezed through the first set and held off a mini fightback from the Spaniard at the start of the second to win 6-2 6-4. He produced a first serve percentage of 77%.

These two have remarkably played each other 21 times, with Medvedev leading 14-7. He has won their last five meetings, including the two matches this year in Halle and Beijing. They have faced each other at this event on two previous occasions, with Medvedev coming from a set down to win the final in 2020 and then winning again in the semi-finals a year later.

Medvedev has the upper hand when they face each other, as he handily neutralises the Zverev serve and doesn’t allow the German to dictate many of the rallies on his backhand side. Furthermore, the Russian’s form has improved immeasurably under a new coaching set up during the past month, having won his first title since May 2023 in Almaty two weeks ago.

There’s a strong chance Medvedev can get one over on his old rival once again.
