Daniil Medvedev fought off cramp to finally end his Learner Tien hoodoo and reach the last eight in Shanghai.

The Russian endured physical issues in a decider against the American teenager in Beijing last week and it looked like being a case of déjà vu when it cost him the tie-break in the second set here.

However, the former world number one somehow recovered to edge the decider and post a 7-6 6-7 6-4 victory that exorcises some demons from his defeats to the 19-year-old at this year’s Australian Open and in the Chinese capital. 

The 13th seed will now meet Alex de Minaur for a 12th time after the Aussie notched up a 50th tour-level win of the season with a strong 7-5 6-2 success over Nuno Borges.

Medvedev leads the match-up 7-4 overall and 7-2 on a hardcourt to suggest he will like his chances against the seventh seed on this surface.

Demon is the more in-form player and will surely have more freshness about his game, so if he’s going to change the narrative in the head-to-head, this is a good chance but he may have to outlast the Russian, who has grown fond of a marathon.
