Danielle Collins arrives late to the European clay-swing on the back of seeing her title defence end at the quarter-final stage in Charleston. 

The American is very much at home on the dirt with it statistically being her best surface on tour. 

First up in Rome she meets Elena-Gabriela Ruse who has looked solid in progressing from qualifying to the second round, dropping just one set in a tie-break over three matches. 

The world number 88 also enjoyed a run to the semi-finals in Rouen so could pose the 29th seed some trouble if she is a bit rusty from a brief but recent lay off. 

Collins is likely to scrap and show trademark feistiness even if she isn’t at her best and she’ll expect to progress in a tournament where she reached the last four in 2024.
