Daniel Altmaier has failed to build any momentum in the lead up to the US Open. He lost in the first-round of Washington, Toronto and Cincinnati before dropping down and competing on the Challenger Tour in Cancun but only winning one match. His best form was found during the clay court season, which included a run to the fourth-round of the French Open.
Hamad Medjedovic has made a strong return from injury. He won his first two matches in Cincinnati and tested world number two Carlos Alcaraz in round three, losing 6-4 6-4. The Serb followed that up with three more victories to make the quarter-finals in Winston-Salem.
Their only meeting occurred in Marseille earlier this year with the Serb edging past Altmaier in three sets. Medjedovic is likely to be the aggressor from the off with his big groundstrokes and should be able to control the tempo. He’s coming into this tournament brimming with confidence and is a strong favourite here.
