Dane Sweeney is set to compete in his second Australian Open after qualifying for the main draw. He dropped just the one set from his three matches. Sweeney had already shown some encouraging signs in Brisbane as he won both of his qualifying matches at that event, before a loss to last year’s finalist Reilly Opelka in the first-round.
He takes on Gael Monfils in round one. The 39-year-old confirmed that 2026 will be his last on tour, and he will be competing at the Australian Open for the final time, having made his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne back in 2005. He began his season in Auckland as the defending champion but lost to Fabian Marozsan in round one despite taking the first set.
Monfils will not want his final Australian Open to end at the first hurdle, and he should have enough in the tank to overcome Sweeny over a best of five set match.
