Dan Martin advanced to the main draw of his home tournament after beating Taro Daniel in three sets in the only stage of qualifying. The 26-year-old is ranked 560 in the world. He had lost his last three matches before his encounter with Daniel in Toronto, though he does have a title to his name this season after winning on the ITF Tour in Villahermosa.
His first-round opponent will be Jaume Munar. Munar has competed in just one tournament since his third-round loss to Marin Cilic at the start of this month at Wimbledon. He defeated Marcos Giron in round one of the Washington Open but then came unstuck against compatriot and eventual finalist Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
