Damir Dzumhur recovered from a dreadful start to beat Pedro Martinez in the first-round of the Rio Open. Dzumhur did not win a service game in the first set as Martinez romped ahead. However, he looked set to take the match into the decider as he served for the set at 5-3 but was broken by Martinez. He remained in the tournament as he won the tiebreak and managed to see the match out in the third to win 0-6 7-6 (5) 6-4.
He now takes on Jaime Faria. The Portuguese produced the shock of the round as he dumped two-time defending champion Sebastian Baez out of the tournament. Faria only entered the event as a lucky loser but edged a tight first set and dominated after that to win 7-5 6-1.
Dzumhur was still vulnerable in his first-round match and could encounter some difficulties against Faria, who will be confident of replicating his display against Baez in this match.
