Damir Dzumhur qualified for the Paris Masters last time out but was comprehensively beaten by Francisco Cerundolo in the first-round, losing 6-3 6-3. His best results this season on the ATP Tour have been on clay and he has struggled to make inroads on any other surface. He has moved around 20 places to 63 in the world over the course of the season.
He goes up against Jacob Fearnley in round one. The Briton also qualified for the final Masters 1000 event of the season and also saw his campaign end in the first-round as he was well beaten by Andrey Rublev. That loss will have been a slight disappointment for Fearnley, given Rublev’s poor form heading into the event and the 24-year-old's display against world number three Alexander Zverev during the previous week, as he took the German to a deciding set tiebreak in Vienna. Fearnley’s second half of the season has been disappointing and his form has been mostly poor since Wimbledon.
Nevertheless, he has shown how competitive he can be with his displays against Zverev and Tallon Griekspoor in recent weeks and if he can produce a similar level here, he should be able to defeat Dzumhur.
