Cristina Buca ended what was a fairly mad eight-match losing streak since late-March in the first round of the Cincinnati Open, albeit the 28-year-old world number 40 then succumbed to a straight sets loss to Maja Chwalinska in the second round.

Anna Bondar, on the other hand, needed back-to-back victories in qualification against Elsa Jacquemot and En Shuto Liang to qualify for the first round. The 29-year-old Hungarian enjoyed a relatively strong summer, which was headlined by reaching the final of the Hamburg Open.

Bucsa remains the higher ranked player here but those rankings may give a false impression and siding with Bondar may well be the way to go for this one.
