Cristian Garin is still searching for his first win of the season after three straight losses. He failed to qualify for the Hong Kong Open after a defeat to Michael Mmoh despite going a set up. This was followed by a disappointing defeat to Eliot Spizzirri in Auckland Open qualifying, and Garin then lost in the first round of the Australian Open to Luciano Darderi in straight sets. He pulled out of the Argentina Open on the eve of the tournament.
He goes up against Thiago Agustin Tirante. He is ranked just three places below Garin. Tirante does have more form heading into this event, as he won his first ever main draw match at the Australian Open against Aleksandar Vukic to make the second-round. He then advanced to the last eight of the Manama Challenger, before winning one of his two singles matches in Davis Cup qualifying as Argentina lost to South Korea.
Tirante could put Garin under pressure in the early moments here, and he has enough quality to defeat the Chilean.
