THE LOWDOWN

NEW ZEALAND WOMEN

  • New Zealand can still qualify for the semi-finals, but they’ll need to thrash Sri Lanka by a big margin, as they did against Bangladesh last time out because net-run-rate could play a decisive role in deciding who joins Australia in the last four from Group 1.
  • Suzie Bates picked a good time to get in amongst the runs, scoring 81 not out against the Tigers, perhaps sending a message to all those WPL franchises who opted not to pick her up at the action.

SRI LANKA WOMEN

  • Despite an expected defeat at the hands of Australia, albeit perhaps by a much heavier margin than they would have hoped for, Sri Lanka are still in pole position to reach the knockout stage, provided South Africa don’t pull off a shock victory over Australia.
  • For the second match running Harshitha Samarawickrama top scored for Sri Lanka, backing up her 69 not out against Bangladesh with 34 vs the Aussies.

THE PREDICTION

Whilst Sri Lanka have been the stronger over the course of the tournament, how often do we see the team that starts slow with little-to-no momentum build up a head of steam, go on a winning run which sees them reach the next round, before they ride that momentum further into the competition. This may well prove to be the case for New Zealand based on their Bangladesh showing, particularly with the likes of Bates finding some form at a key time. This may not bode well for Sri Lanka and backing New Zealand to pick up the points looks a shrewd play.
