TRENT ROCKETS MEN
- Trent Rockets’ top order batting combine explosive power with quality strokeplay as Alex Hales and Australian overseas player D’Arcy Short link up with ICC number one ranked T20i batter Dawid Malan and England Test captain Joe Root.
- Hales will play a massive role for the Rockets on his home ground opening the batting, having accrued the second highest number of runs in T20 cricket of any player so far in 2021 and either Australian Short or Sussex’s Luke Wright are expected to be chosen as his opening partner.
- The bowling attack is led by Afghanistan superstar Rashid Khan, the number one pick in the inaugural Hundred draft back in 2019 and the mystery spinner is complemented by both the pace of fast bowler Marchant de Lange and the variations in speed provided by all-rounder and captain Lewis Gregory, who comes into the tournament having been part of the England limited overs squad that beat Pakistan in both the ODI and the T20i series.
SOUTHERN BRAVE MEN
- On paper, this Southern Brave outfit, led by Mumbai Indians head coach and three-time IPL winner Mahela Jayawardene looks absolutely stacked and arguably the finest of the eight men’s teams set to compete in the competition.
- Despite the withdrawal of original overseas stars David Warner and Andre Russell, Southern Brave moved fast to replace them with players of similar quality in South Africa wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock and New Zealand opener Devon Conway, who has enjoyed a dream summer in England so far playing both Test cricket for the Black Caps and T20 Blast cricket for Somerset.
- De Kock and Conway could form a mouthwatering opening partnership with Hampshire’s James Vince also complimenting the batting whilst in Chris Jordan, Southern Brave boasts England’s go-to bowler in T20i cricket for a number of years now and he will link up with Sussex teammate Tymal Mills, who will bring sheer pace to the table, however England’s mercurial fast bowler Jofra Archer is likely to miss out as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury.
THE PREDICTION
On a ground that saw Pakistan rack up 232 runs in a T20i earlier in the month, the Trent Bridge crowd should be treated to plenty of boundaries in this match, with both sides boasting monster hitters among their top order. Assuming both find scoring runs fairly easy to come by here, the quality of the bowling units will be absolutely crucial. On paper, Southern Brave’s bowling attack looks more impressive, however this Trent Rockets side is filled with bowlers from Notts Outlaws such as Matthew Carter, Samit Patel and formerly Luke Wood who will know their home ground inside out and therefore be well equipped to deal with the conditions. Add that to the sheer brilliance of Rashid and it may just prove enough to lead Trent Rockets to victory here on their own patch.
