THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTHERN BRAVE MEN

  • Southern Brave were taken apart by the brute force of Jonny Bairstow in Cardiff last time out as they fell to a second successive defeat, losing by 18 runs as they failed to chase down 166 for victory.
  • After failing in the first match, their top order showed much more promise vs Welsh Fire as openers James Vince and Quinton de Kock hit 40 and 21 respectively, the latter off just 7 deliveries with two fours and two sixes.
  • The Brave continue to play without fast bowler Jofra Archer through injury and the England star is not expected to have recovered in time to feature in this match.

BIRMINGHAM PHOENIX MEN

  • After beating London Spirit in their opening Hundred contest, Birmingham Phoenix lost to Manchester Originals this past Sunday after being bowled out for just 87 on a very tough pitch for batting.
  • The Phoenix left themselves far too much to do with the ball, although four of their five bowlers utilised picking up a wicket at least gives them something to take out of the game.
  • Moeen Ali’s side will be boosted by not having to dramatically adjust following the loss of their England test players to international duty with Chris Woakes injured and Dom Sibley having not featured in either of the two opening games.

THE PREDICTION

Despite having been labelled as one of the men’s tournament favourites originally, Southern Brave have made a terrible start having lost their opening two games. They’ll be hoping that home advantage has an impact here against Birmingham Phoenix. However, head coach Mahela Jayawardene has recovered from slow stars before with Mumbai Indians at the Indian Premier League and won’t be overly concerned. The Southern Brave batting showed positive signs vs Welsh Fire, with Quinton de Kock looking a very good signing based on his brief but powerful innings. It feels like only a matter of time before the Brave top order of Vince, De Kock and Conway clicks together and it would be no surprise if this was the match for them to do so, leading the home side to their first win of the Hundred.
