THE TEAM NEWS

LONDON SPIRIT MEN

  • In a tight first match, London Spirit were edged out by Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston as Eoin Morgan’s side failed to defend a score of 144 with the home team reaching their target with three balls to spare.
  • England test batter Zak Crawley once again underlined his potential in the white ball form of the game after smashing 64 from just 40 deliveries opening the batting
  • Captain Morgan and head coach Shane Warne may well look to tinker with their bowling line-up following their defeat with both leg-spin bowler Mason Crane and the experienced Jade Dernbach with his variations each hoping to make an appearance.

OVAL INVINCIBLES MEN

  • Oval Invincibles marked the opening men’s fixture of the Hundred in style, winning on their home ground by nine runs against Manchester Originals after scoring 145/8 upon being asked to bat first.
  • Captain Sam Billings knows that a good tournament here will go a long way to seeing him make the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup and he made a fantastic start with a fast 49 from 30 balls.
  • However, the Invincibles will likely be without Saqib Mahmood for this contest, as the fast bowler pulled up injured whilst in the field vs the Originals, whilst leg-spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has been named as a replacement for Sandeep Lamichhane, although the in-form South African won’t be ready to play just yet having featured for his country against Ireland the day before.

THE PREDICTION

London Spirit will be under pressure to bounce back immediately when taking into account that this is the second of only eight league games that they will play in the competition. Fine margins saw them lose out against Birmingham and Eoin Morgan won’t be panicking. Oval Invincibles boasts a strong batting line-up, but their bowling has taken a huge hit through the injury to Saqib and him not featuring here would be a massive blow. London Spirit’s deep batting line-up should really enjoy themselves against a depleted Invincibles and with home advantage in their favour, this experienced Spirit side are expected to deliver a positive response and accrue a narrow win. However, with the weather forecast not looking to promising, be sure to monitor conditions very closely before making any moves.
