THE PREDICTION

Somerset are bidding to reach a second finals day in as many years as they host Derbyshire Falcons at Taunton, a ground renowned for its high scoring fixtures in T20 cricket. When you assess Somerset’s side, it’s easy to see why they have made it this far. In Will Smeed and Tom Banton, they contain arguably the most exciting opening partnership of the tournament whilst overseas batter Rilee Rossouw has been in magnificent form across this year’s Blast. Derbyshire Falcons face a tough task to stem the expected flow of Somerset runs and fast bowler George Scrimshaw will have to be at his very best, as will leg-spin bowler Mattie McKiernan.

Unfortunately for the visitors, they will be without their captain and chief run-scorer Shan Masood, who has travelled to Sri Lanka following his recall to the Pakistan Test squad. It’s not just Masood’s runs that will be missed here, but also his general leadership which has helped transformed the fortunes of this Derbyshire squad under head of cricket Mickey Arthur. No doubt the Falcons will give as good as they get and will believe they can cause what would be the biggest upset of the quarter-finals, but the top order firepower and strength-in-depth of Somerset with the bat should prove too strong for them on a ground such as Taunton, so back a home victory for Tom Abell’s men.
