THE PREDICTION
The 20th edition of the T20 Blast is down to just two teams as Lancashire Lightning face off against Hampshire Hawks in the culmination of finals day at Edgbaston. Both teams reached the final fairly comfortably in the end, Lancashire chasing down 205 to beat Roses rivals Yorkshire Vikings with 1.2 overs to spare whilst Hampshire Hawks strangled Somerset into submission, beating them by 37 runs after scoring 190/6. The batting of Lancashire’s top order was ruthless in the semi-final, especially in the powerplay which saw them lay the foundations for the highest successful run chase in finals day. However, they are unlikely to find it anywhere near as comfortable against an outstandingly well-drilled Hawks bowling attack who outclassed one of the strongest T20 Blast top orders in Somerset.
As we stated in our semi-final preview, batters win you games of T20 cricket, but bowlers win you titles and it’s hard to argue that Hampshire Hawks boast the strongest bowling unit in the competition. Chris Wood and Nathan Ellis contain wicket-taking pace variations, Brad Wheal brings express speed to the table and Liam Dawson alongside Mason Crane offer excellent spin-bowling options. Combine that with a strong fielding effort and you have a winning formula. Lancashire will be confident considering how well they’ve played throughout the competition, but this Hampshire Hawks team contain the tools needed to blunt the batting of Lancashire and have to be favoured to lift their third T20 Blast trophy in the competition’s 20th anniversary.
