THE LOWDOWN
Reigning champions Notts Outlaws bid to make it five straight T20 Blast home quarter-final victories on the bounce since 2016 as the North Group winners host Hampshire Hawks, who snuck through the South Group in fourth-place after a late winning run in the group stage. The Outlaws boasts some serious heavy hitters at the top of the order in Alex Hales and Joe Clarke, whilst all-rounders Samit Patel and Steven Mullaney form the engine room for the Outlaws. Bowler Jake Ball however, will miss out through injury. Hampshire Hawks’ captain James Vince is the newly crowned men’s Hundred winning captain after leading his Southern Brave side to victory this past weekend at Lord’s and he is set to open the batting with Australian D’Arcy Short. Mason Crane provides an important spin-bowling option, however left-arm pacer Chris Wood isn’t expected to recover from injury in time to feature.
THE PREDICTION
With a packed Trent Bridge crowd right behind the home side, Hampshire Hawks will up against it here. So much depends upon openers Vince and Short getting them off to a good start, however Notts Outlaws will no doubt deploy wily spin-bowler Neil Carter who has a fantastic habit of taking wickets inside the powerplay. Ultimately though, this match should be won in the middle order. The experience of players such as Patel and Mullaney coming to the crease following Hales, Clarke and Duckett is a huge weapon for the hosts to have in their arsenal with the bat and that’s not even taking into account the value they bring with the ball. Such strength-in-depth is expected to prove too strong for Hampshire Hawks, so back the Outlaws to reach yet another T20 Blast finals day here.
