THE LOWDOWN
Always one of the most highly anticipated matches in the T20 Blast, Middlesex entertain Surrey at Lord’s in the first of two London derbies in the South Group. The home side are captained by England limited overs skipper Eoin Morgan and have signed Australian all-rounder Chris Green as a replacement for fellow countryman Mitchell Marsh, with Ireland opener Paul Stirling their second overseas player. Whilst left-arm bowler Reece Topley and wicketkeeper Ben Foakes will miss out through injury, last year’s runners up Surrey have a large number of their England internationals available for this match including World Cup winner Jason Roy alongside both Sam and Tom Curran.
THE PREDICTION
Local pride is at stake here with both teams desperate to get their T20 Blast campaign off to the best possible start. Middlesex will have been disappointed that Mitchell Marsh could not come over to play for them, however in Morgan they have one of the best captains in world cricket to lead them here. Surrey however, boast far greater depth within their squad than Middlesex, particularly following the return of their England limited overs internationals. The visitors bat deep with Roy, Will Jacks, overseas star Hashim Amla and Laurie Evans expected to get them off to a good start when they come to bat. All-rounders such as the Curran brothers and Jamie Overton provide depth and the vastly experienced Gareth Batty has the ability to strangle the Middlesex batting line-up with his off-spin bowling. Surrey do look a very strong T20 unit and last season’s finalists look likely to go deep in the competition once again this season, beginning with victory against their biggest rivals.
