THE LOWDOWN
Essex Eagles’ dramatic last-ball victory over Middlesex on Thursday night will give Simon Harmer’s side a major boost as we progress through the middle of the Blast group stages. Harmer himself hit the winning runs as the first-class champions look to fill the white-ball middle-order finishing hole left by Ravi Bopara. They were restricted to just 147-7 on Tuesday but that top-order supplemented by Denly, Leaning, Blake, Cox and Stevens shouldn’t go two matches without a big score.

The idea that a side is ‘due’ a score is never something to bet on; especially in T20 cricket when the matches come thick and fast. Kent stumbled against unorthodox bowling from left-arm spinner Tom Smith and the relentless Benny Howell against Gloucestershire.
