THE TEAM NEWS

WELLINGTON FIREBIRDS

  • Reigning champions Wellington Firebirds were unable to back up their opening day victory against Canterbury Kings in this season’s Super Smash, losing by 14 runs to Central Stags just under two weeks ago.
  • Key batter Devon Conway remains absent for the Firebirds, although they could be boosted by the return of Rachin Ravindra and Jimmy Neesham from international duty, subject to approval from the Black Caps.

CANTERBURY KINGS

  • Canterbury Kings triumphed comfortably over Central Stags last time out, but here they face the side who beat them by 27 runs in the first Super Smash match of the campaign and revenge will be on their minds.
  • Captain Cole McConchie showed his class against the Stags, hitting a fantastic 84 from just 54 balls batting at four and he will once again play a huge role for his side whether it be with the bat, with the ball or as a skipper.

THE PREDICTION

Wellington Firebirds will be delighted to return to action at Cello Basin Reserve as they aim to secure a second Super Smash victory over Canterbury Kings this season. Their last battle saw opener Finn Allen shine for the Firebirds with 57 at the top of the order and he’ll be looking to get in among the runs here at home. From an overall batting perspective, the depth of Wellington does appear narrowly stronger than that of Canterbury whose batters have recorded a top individual score of just 31 after two games if you disregard McConchie’s knock of 84. This is likely to prove the defining factor in this encounter and with home advantage in Wellington Firebirds’ favour, victory for them for a second time over Canterbury Kings appears to be on the cards.
