THE LOWDOWN

OTAGO VOLTS

  • Otago Volts’ Super Smash campaign is petering out badly as they have now lost their last six matches in a row and they are coming off a 103-run hammering at the hands of the Auckland Aces last time out.
  • After being bowled out for just 80 in 12.3 overs against the Aces, confidence could be somewhat dented from that and with nothing to play for other than pride, they are going to have to lift themselves for this final game.
  • They have the same set of players at their disposal so they will need some of their veterans like Neil broom, Hamish Rutherford and Mitch McClenaghan to really step up and lead their young side against the Knights.

NORTHERN KNIGHTS

  • Northern Knights are paying for their abysmal start to the tournament as despite winning their last three matches, the Stags’ win on Friday saw their chances of reaching the knockouts evaporate mathematically.
  • With two wins over Auckland Aces and one over the Canterbury Kings, the Knights have been in exceptional form of late which has understandably coincided with the return of some key international players.
  • Kane Williamson has been enjoying playing some rare domestic T20 cricket and he has been in excellent form along with the likes of Boult, Southee, Santner, De Grandhomme and Kuggeleijn in what is a star-studded team.

THE PREDICTION

Contrasting ends to this Super Smash campaign for the Volts and the Knights, and while neither will make it to the knockout phase, the Knights are flying right now while the Volts are struggling badly. Even if the Knights ease off the gas, it seems highly unlikely the Volts will beat them given the massive gulf in quality between the two teams. Motivation is certainly a question mark for both sides but form is clearly with the Knights’. Barring complacency, everything points in favour of the Knights ending the campaign in style here.
