THE LOWDOWN
OTAGO VOLTS
- Otago Volts were beaten in the Preliminary Final last year by their opponents here the Auckland Aces by three wickets and they will be looking to avenge that defeat in what is their first game of the 2020/21 Super Smash.
- They will be able to count on new signing Mitch McClenaghan who they poached from the Auckland Aces so the veteran pace bowler will be desperate to do well against his former team-mates.
- They will be without one of their key batsmen as Dean Foxcroft has been denied entry to the country after the South-African born batsman had returned home and is unable to return due to COVID but they can count on key men such as Nick Kelly, Hamish Rutherford and Neil Broom who will have to be at their best to cover that loss.
AUCKLAND ACES
- Auckland Aces return to action determined to bounce back from their opening defeat at the hands of the defending champions Wellington Firebirds who beat them by four wickets as their 176/3 proved to be insufficient.
- Graeme Beghin and Sean Solia got them off to an excellent start and they will have hoped to have reached closer to 200 after finding themselves 138/1 but they had to make do with 176 and their bowling attack struggled to restrict the Firebirds.
- Their batting order is bolstered by the return of Blackcap Glenn Phillips who had been in excellent form for his country but they will not be able to count on Mark Chapman and Martin Guptill as the international duo are carrying knocks right now.
THE PREDICTION
Otago Volts come into their first game and they face the Auckland Aces who knocked them out in the prelim final last year. The Aces have the benefit of having played a game already and even in defeat to the Firebirds, they were plenty of positives in their performance. That display along with the return of Glenn Phillips could give them the advantage here against the Volts. The Otago side have plenty of quality themselves but it may take them a little time to hit their stride and the Auckland Aces are favoured in this one.
