THE LOWDOWN
NORTHERN KNIGHTS
- Northern Knights fell short for the second consecutive game on New Years’ Day as their total of 148/6 when batting first against the Wellington Firebirds proved to be nowhere near enough and the defending champions knocked the total off with four overs to spare to send the Knights back to the drawing board.
- It was their batting that once again let them down as Tim Seifert managed to hit 46 and while that anchored the innings at a relatively slow run-a-ball knock at the top of the order, not enough of his colleagues could make significant contributions.
- Scott Kuggeleijn bowled much better going for 1/21 from his four overs which was the only real positive in the field as that was the only wicket taken, and
OTAGO VOLTS
- Otago Volts won their opening game against the Auckland Aces but were brought back down to earth against the Canterbury Kings as they were bowled out for just 124 chasing 186 so they will be eager to bounce back here after that disappointing display.
- Unlike the Knights who are playing back-to-back matches, the Volts have had several days of rest so they will be raring to go here and have had plenty of time to prepare for this match and their opponents.
- The likes of Nick Kelly and Hamish Rutherford especially will be desperate to improve with the bat after combining for 67 runs from their four innings while they may be tempted to go back to Dale Phillips ahead of Josh Finnie here.
THE PREDICTION
The Northern Knights have a tough test ahead of them to pick themselves up after a tough loss on Friday. They have now lost both matches and they have looked particularly vulnerable due to their lack of depth with both bat and ball. They have some big names in Seifert, Devcich and Kuggeleijn but very little else and that is costing them. They face an Otago Volts side that do possess good all-round quality and the positive for them after the opening two games is that it has been some of their lesser-known players that have produced the goods. They still have plenty of scope for improvement themselves and they have to be favoured to compound the Knights’ miseries here.
