THE LOWDOWN
CANTERBURY KINGS
- Canterbury Kings are all but assured of a place in the knockout round but they have lost their last two games now and they will be eager to get a win under their belts here and regain some momentum.
- The team chasing has won their last four matches and having batted first in the last two games, their batting order has fallen short in both games as they were bowled out for 118 against Northern Knights and then they produced a sub-par 153/7 against the Wellington Firebirds.
- With only Daryl Mitchell having scored more than 200 total runs across their eight games so far and just four fifties produced, the pressure is firmly on their batsmen and given they have named the same squad once again, they are relying on their usual line-up to raise their game.
OTAGO VOLTS
- Otago Volts’ Super Smash campaign is petering out to sad end as after winning two of their opening three games, they have since lost their last four matches and they have nothing but pride to play for here.
- Similar to the Kings, their weakness has been in their batting as none of their batsmen have tallied more than 200 runs in the tournament so far and they too have only managed a combined total of four fifties.
- They will continue to give opportunities to some of their younger players like Nathan Smith and Dale Phillips as unlike some of the other teams in the tournament, they have been unable to bring any returning international players in and that is why they have been found wanting in the second half of the group stage.
THE PREDICTION
Neither of these teams come into this game with any form behind them but it is the Canterbury Kings who have the edge in motivation here. They will almost certainly make the play-offs but they need to raise their game now to regain some momentum. They have some key players like Matt Henry and Daryl Mitchell who are in reasonable form and that duo can lead them to success here. The Volts are struggling and unlike so many other teams that have gotten stronger, they have not and it is hard to see them winning any of their remaining games especially with nothing to play for. The preference here is clearly for the Kings.
