THE LOWDOWN
CANTERBURY KINGS
- Canterbury Kings lost their first match of this edition of the Super Smash on Sunday as they slipped to an 18-run defeat at the hands of the impressive Wellington Firebirds after falling short of the 186/5 posted by the defending champions.
- They welcomed back Daryl Mitchell after international duty for that game and the all-rounder smashed 71 from 46 balls but not enough of his colleagues could support him and they were always struggling after losing both openers for ducks in the first over of the run chase.
- With the same set of players at their disposal for this game, an unchanged team is highly likely as they face the Auckland Aces who they beat just over a week ago by ten wickets albeit in a rain-reduced five-over shootout.
AUCKLAND ACES
- It has been a miserable start to the Super Smash for last season’s runners-up as the Auckland Aces have lost all four matches played so far and they will be desperate to finally get up and running here.
- After recouping Glenn Phillips and Mark Chapman following international duty and injury, they are now able to call upon Martin Guptill as the explosive veteran opener is fit again and he will bolster their batting significantly.
- One of their batsmen will have to make way for him but that will not be difficult given the poor form of so many of their line-up, and the inclusion of Guptill is expected to be the only change for this game.
THE PREDICTION
All the pressure coming into this game is on the Auckland Aces who are struggling badly in this current edition of the Super Smash. After losing their opening four games, they simply have to get a win here to remain in contention for the knockout phase. That will not be easy as they travel to face Canterbury Kings although they do welcome back Martin Guptill and while his recent form has not been that good, his presence will serve as a major boost. The Aces batting line-up is looking much stronger with Chapman, Phillips and Guptill, but their bowling is still lacking quality. Against a well-rounded Canterbury Kings side, they may find it difficult but expect a reaction from their star batsmen who can lead them to their first win here.
