THE PREDICTION
Somerset disappointed the most of any Division One side in the opening round of games, falling to an innings and 113-run defeat away at Hampshire and will hope that home comforts at Taunton can spark their season into life here against Essex, alongside the return of England Test bowlers Craig Overton and Jack Leach. Despite three batters recording centuries including Sir Alastair Cook, Essex were unable to force a result against Kent at Chelmsford last time out due to a totally flat wicket. However, the Eagles have a trump card up their sleeve as they are expected to welcome South African star Simon Harmer back into their side following his Test exploits for the Proteas against Bangladesh. Of all the matches on show in this second round of fixtures, these two locking horns is likely to be closest battle with either team capable of victory. Somerset’s home advantage perhaps narrowly gives them the edge, but if Essex are allowed to put up a big first innings score as they did against Kent, then don’t be surprised if Harmer was to weave his magic on a Somerset batting line-up lacking confidence.
