KARACHI KINGS
- Expectations are high within the Karachi Kings camp coming into this delayed knockout phase of PSL|5 but they come into this qualifier against Multan Sultans without coach Dean Jones who tragically died in September so Pakistani legend Wasim Akram will serve as interim coach for the finale.
- The shock news about Jones will only serve to motivate his team even more so as the Kings had played some excellent cricket in the group stage in pursuit of their first ever PSL title so that will clearly be their target here.
- The Kings have arguably the best set of local players in Babar Azam, Iftikhar Ahmed, Imad Wasim, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Rizwan, but they are well-supported by overseas stars such as Alex Hales, Cameron Delport, Chadwick Walton, Mitch McClenaghan and Sherfane Rutherford who are all in Pakistan and ready to contribute.
MULTAN SULTANS
- Multan Sultans were the standout team in the group stage having lost just two of their ten matches as they topped the group and played some excellent cricket with their strong all-round team.
- They will be hoping to avoid losing any of that momentum although their preparations have been somewhat hampered by James Vince and Mahmudullah who have tested positive for COVID-19 and have been ruled out so England’s Joe Denly has been drafted in and he will join Adam Lyth, Imran Tahir, Ravi Bopara and Rilee Rossouw as their overseas stars.
- They may not possess the stars like the Kings have in their ranks but Khushdil Shah, Shan Mahsood, Zeeshan Ashraf and Sohail Tanvir were in sensational form in the group stage and will be key in their hopes here once again.
THE PREDICTION
There is a clear favourite on paper when looking at the rosters of the Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans but the same could have been said in the group stage but the Sultans clearly outperformed the star-studded Kings team. There are so many unknowns coming into this knockout phase of the tournament but at least both of these teams have the comfort of knowing they have a second chance if they do lose here. The Kings’ international stars such as Babar Azam, Mohammad Rizwan and Iftikhar Ahmed are coming straight off duty against Zimbabwe so they will be well-prepared but some of the overseas stars on both teams may struggle to hit the ground running due to a lack of action of late. Ultimately, the Karachi outfit have the greater quality and home advantage, and they simply have to be favoured in this qualifier.
