LAHORE QALANDARS
- After comfortably being the least successful team in PSL history, the Lahore Qalandars enjoyed their best campaign yet last year as they made the knockout phase for the first time ever but ultimately lost in the final to the Karachi Kings.
- The positive news for the Qalandars is that they have retained the vast majority of their roster from last year and that will give them confidence especially with the addition of star leg-spinner Rashid Khan.
- There is no Chris Lynn for them but their batting otherwise remains strong and well-rounded while Tom Abell and Joe Denly have been signed to bolster their overseas options as they look capable of challenging once again.
PESHAWAR ZALMI
- Peshawar Zalmi produced their worst finish to a PSL campaign last year as they came fourth as they lost to opponents Lahore Qalandars in the first Eliminator so they will be hoping to fare much better this time around.
- They used a staggering 24 different players last season and that was a combination between losing some for the delayed knockout phase, unavailability of players and the poor form of many of their overseas players as they struggled badly.
- They have overhauled their squad this time around they have signed a whole new batch of overseas players including Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Sherfane Rutherford, Ravi Bopara, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and eventually David Miller so they will be hoping for much more from that contingent.
THE PREDICTION
These two teams met in the knockout phase last year and it was the Qalandars who came out on top in that clash. Their good performances last year could very well roll over into this year for the Qalandars and there is no reason why they cannot do so. Their roster is arguably stronger than it was last year with the arrival of Rashid Khan and they will be fired up to make a fast start. Unlike the Qalandars who have retained the vast majority of their players, Peshawar Zalmi have made several changes and they will be hoping it pays off. There are question marks over them once again however so unless they click immediately, preference goes to the Qalandars to get an opening win.
