NEW ZEALAND
- New Zealand sealed the series at the Bay Oval on Sunday as they posted a mammoth 238/3 when batting first thanks to Glenn Phillips’ stunning 108 from 51 balls which proved far too much for the West Indies as they ultimately fell 72 runs short.
- Martin Guptill and Tim Seifert got them off to a ferocious start and when both openers fell, Devon Conway and Glenn Phillips produced some sensational hitting in a partnership 184 that essentially won the game for them.
- With the series wrapped up, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor and Kyle Jamieson now depart to join the test team so Doug Bracewell, Daryl Mitchell, Hamish Bennett and Mark Chapman are those vying to come into the side for this dead rubber so those changes do weaken them somewhat.
WEST INDIES
- The West Indies’ struggles with the ball continued on Sunday as they were blasted to all parts of the Bay Oval and they are going to have to pick themselves up and improve for the second of these back-to-back matches at the same venue.
- Kyle Mayers came in for his debut and he produced enough to suggest he will get another chance but any rotations may come in the bowling unit as Hayden Walsh Jr may get a chance especially after fellow leg-spinner Ish Sodhi bowled well at the Bay Oval on Sunday.
- With some enforced changes for their opponents, Kieron Pollard will demand a better performance from his team and that will be all areas as they desperately need their batsmen to step up and to score more at the top of the order while their bowlers are equally desperately short on form right now.
THE PREDICTION
New Zealand produced a dominant display on Sunday to blow the Windies away and they will look to seal the whitewash at the Bay Oval. The tourists are struggling for form with bat and ball and although the series has been lost, they will be keen to bounce back and regain some pride by winning this third and final T20. They are boosted by the fact that three of the hosts’ players are unavailable as they join the Test squad so they will lose the experience of Southee and Taylor along with the talented youngster Jamieson. That may leave New Zealand a little short although they have had plenty of standout performances from other players that it may not impact them as much as usual. Whether the tourists can take advantage of that remains to be seen as several of their players are woefully out of form. There may actually be value on the Blackcaps with their team weakened although the Windies have responded well previously under Kieron Pollard and he can inspire them to a victory here to avoid the whitewash.
