THE PREDICTION
Middlesex are unlikely to have star overseas player Shaheen Shah Afridi available for this first match of the season against Derbyshire, who are embarking on a new era under their recently appointed Director of Cricket Mickey Arthur. The South African’s reputation is stellar and a coach of his calibre will inject confidence into a young Derbyshire side who have lost three of their stronger players from last season in Matt Critchley, Fynn Hudson-Prentice and Harvey Hosein, the latter forced to retire due to a number of concussions. Shan Masoon provides steel at the top of the order and Leus du Plooy will hope to regain his touch with the bat following a poor 2021. However, this is a stern examination against a Middlesex side who will cause their opponents huge problems with the bat at Lord’s. Tim Murtagh is one player who may play a defining role here alongside Ethan Bamber and despite the expected absence of Shaheen, backing Middlesex via the draw no bet market looks a sensible move.
