THE TEAM NEWS

NEW ZEALAND

  • New Zealand’s third successive Super 12s victory this past Friday leaves them on the brink of semi-final qualification with victory needed here over Afghanistan to book their spot in the last four.
  • The Black Caps have maintained a settled side throughout the tournament and are expected to stick with the same side for this match.

AFGHANISTAN

  • Defeat to India last time out leaves Afghanistan needing victory here to give themselves a chance of reaching the semi-finals, which would then depend on their net-run-rate compared to India, who play a day later against Namibia.
  • Spin-bowler Mujeeb Ur Rahman has missed Afghanistan’s last two games due to injury and his side will desperately hoping that he recovers in time to be available for this match, especially considering that he had picked up six wickets across his two games already played.

THE PREDICTION

Afghanistan have hugely impressed across this T20 World Cup so far, but this game represents last chance saloon for them in terms of making the semi-finals. Whilst their bowling attack matches up to New Zealand’s in terms of quality, the biggest worry lies within their batting with a lack of experience at the highest level of international cricket within their top order. New Zealand however, contain plenty of star quality such as opener Martin Guptill and captain Kane Williamson, who won’t be in any way phased by the occasion. The stability and reliability of New Zealand’s batting should prove the difference here, leading the Black Caps to a win and with that the semi-finals.
