  • Last year’s T20 World Cup finalists New Zealand are looking to go one step further this time in their bid to secure a long awaited first major ICC white ball trophy following consecutive World Cup final defeats in the 50 over and 20 over format.
  • One of their star players from last year’s competition was all-rounder Daryl Mitchell, but he misses this match with a fractured finger, a huge blow for the Black Caps who could also be without fast bowlers Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne, although they do stand a chance of playing.

  • Australia are looking to retain their maidan T20 World Cup title on home soil after going all the way in the UAE back in 2021, but they’ll need to significantly improve on their recent results in T20i cricket after losing a three-match series to England 0-2.
  • Lots of eyes will be on the big-hitting Tim David, who makes his ICC tournament debut for Australia having previously represented Singapore, whilst all-rounder Mitchell Marsh is fit to play and will be expected to bat at three with Marcus Stoinis in the middle order, meaning that Cameron Green is likely to miss out on selection.

Frustratingly for both nations, a rotten looking weather forecast could see this match curtailed before it even gets going, which would be a real shame when taking into account the quality on show. Australia have been far from at their best going into the tournament, but on home territory with the world class players at their disposal in all departments, you’d expect them to be on form come showtime. New Zealand are as solid an outfit as they come, making up for their lack of superstars with a magnificent team ethic, plenty of batting depth and a sprinkling of stardust among their bowling. Despite that, you would back reigning champions Australia to come out on top as they did in last year’s final, but don’t be surprised if the weather puts paid to any hopes of a result.
