THE LOWDOWN

IRELAND

  • Ireland did not get off to a good start in the ‘Super 12’s”, the opposite in fact as they were thrashed by nine wickets at the hands of Sri Lanka, which saw them dominated with both bat and ball.
  • Batter Harry Tector at least showed some fight with a respectable score of 45, but at least one Irish player needs to kick on and make a significant half-century if they are to trouble England in this one.

ENGLAND

  • England executed their skills well against Afghanistan, especially with the ball as they dismissed their opponents for just 112 and they’ll fancy similar success vs Ireland if they can replicate those performance levels here.
  • It’s unlikely that England will change the bowling attack after their showing last time out, which means right-arm pacer Chris Jordan would miss out once again with Chris Woakes preferred.

THE PREDICTION

On paper, this contest appears to be a significant mismatch. Whilst Ireland will likely put in an improved performance than they did on Sunday which was below the standards of which they are capable of, that isn’t expected to be enough against a formidable England team. Jos Buttler’s side are a superior outfit to Ireland in all departments and will be expected not just to win here, but to win comfortably regardless of whether they are setting or chasing a target.
