THE LOWDOWN

ENGLAND

  • England’s preparation for the 2022 World Cup has been strong with them not only beating Pakistan in a thrilling seven-match T20i series in the sub-continent, but also overcoming tournament hosts and reigning champions Australia 0-2 in a three-game series earlier this month.
  • It hasn’t all been plain-sailing though, with England’s bowling suffering a huge blow leading up to this match after Reece Topley suffered an ankle injury in training which will rule him out of the entire tournament.

AFGHANISTAN

  • It’s common knowledge these days just how strong Afghanistan are at the T20i format of the game, with their bowling unit in particular so incredibly intimidating, led of course by the magical mystery-spinner Rashid Khan and captained well by off-spinning all-rounder Mohammad Nabi.
  • Wicket-keeper and opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz’s is a slight doubt after being hit on the foot by Shaheen Shah Afridi in his side’s World Cup warm-up match against Pakistan, but should be able to play nonetheless.

THE PREDICTION

This match will surely be defined by how well England play Afghanistan’s plethora of quality spin-bowlers. No doubt that Jos Buttler’s side contains by far the superior firepower with the bat both up top and down the order, but Afghanistan boasts a bowling attack which leaves no room for error from an English point of view. In Australia though, conditions are expected to suit the batters and with a vast array of shots within their armoury, England should be able to overpower Afghanistan across their batting innings whether they be setting or chasing a target. With that in mind, back Buttler’s men to triumph in this one.
