THE PREDICTION
Lancashire were rocked by the news earlier this week that fast bowler Saqib Mahmood will be ruled out for the rest of the season due to a stress fracture to his back. However, in the short term this shouldn’t affect Lancashire against a weak Essex batting line-up. Overseas pacer Hassan Ali was rested against Yorkshire last time out, but should come back into the side here and enjoy tucking into the Essex batters, whilst James Anderson could also play a second consecutive County Championship match. The battle between Anderson and former England teammate Alastair Cook is an exciting prospect for cricket fans, but from an Essex perspective they rely far too much on Cook for runs. Add that to an underperforming bowling unit that has seen Simon Harmer fail to make a significant impact this season and Lancashire have to be favoured for victory against the Eagles.
