ZIMBABWE
- Zimbabwe’s made it six T20i victories in a row on Saturday, beating Bangladesh by 17 runs in the first match of this three-game series after accumulating 205/3 batting first, justifying their decision to bat upon winning the toss.
- The performance of Zimbabwe’s top order will be especially pleasing for the hosts with four of their top five recording scores of 21 or above, including two half-centuries for Wesley Madhevere and Sikandar Raza, although the former was forced to retire injured on 67 and is unlikely to play in this second match.
BANGLADESH
- Bangladesh can take heart from keeping themselves in the run chase until the final couple of overs despite conceding such a vast total, but ultimately the weight of runs got the better of the Tigers, who fell 17 short in the end.
- The powerplay performance of the Bangladesh batters in particular was impressive, but they simply need to translate that into the middle overs if they are to start accruing match-winning totals whether they be setting or chasing a target.
THE PREDICTION
The number of experienced players missing for Bangladesh certainly took its toll on their players across the first T20i and had a number of them been available then maybe they would have changed down their victory target, which for starters may have turned out to be smaller than it was. However, the tourists were competitive and are likely to be facing a Zimbabwe side further weakened by the expected absence of Madhevere following his hamstring injury sustained whilst at the crease. Zimbabwe are already missing players such as Blessing Muzarabani and Tendai Chatara, so adding Madhevere to that list would be a blow. It would be no surprise if Bangladesh was to further improve as this tour goes on and backing the Tigers to level the series may well turn out a shrewd move.
