THE TEAM NEWS

INDIA

  • Despite scoring 211/4 after being asked to bat first, the Indian bowlers failed to stem the flow of runs throughout the chase on an excellent batting surface and ultimately fell to defeat in Delhi, ending a 12-match T20i winning run.
  • Ishan Kishan and Ruturaj Gaikwad were chosen as the opening partnership, with Kishan making an impressive 73 and the batting as a whole is likely to remain unchanged following the first match.
  • The hosts may however be tempted to tinker with the bowling unit, Arshdeep Singh perhaps being one player who could come into the side should India wish to make a change.

SOUTH AFRICA

  • South Africa will have been delighted with the strength-in-depth displayed among their batting order in the first T20i, with Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller coming in at numbers four and five respectively to play decisive roles in the run chase, the former scoring 75 and the latter 64 in an unbroken partnership of 131
  • The Proteas opted to field two spin-bowlers in the first T20i and will likely want to assess the pitch before making a decision on whether to keep Keshav Maharaj in the starting line-up, or instead to field an extra seamer such as Marco Jansen or Lungi Ngidi.
  • Young big-hitting batter Tristan Stubbs made his T20i debut for South Africa in Delhi, but didn’t even get a chance to bat due to the performances of those in front of him, so is expected to retain his place for the second T20i.

THE PREDICTION

India may be playing this series without a full-strength side to choose from, but the team they fielded this past Thursday were high in quality, particularly on the bowling front which made the successful South Africa run chase all the more impressive. However, a strong reaction is expected from the host nation here in Cuttack. The Proteas are quietly establishing themselves as an extremely dangerous T20 unit and once again should match up to India on the batting front, but an improvement in performance is likely from the Indian bowlers which may just tip the scales in their favour. With that in mind, consider backing the hosts to level up this series.
