THE TEAM NEWS
ENGLAND
- Jos Buttler’s first T20i as England’s new white ball captain was one to forget as his side were comprehensively beaten by India after being bowled out for just 148 chasing 199 to win in Southampton.
- England opted to field three bowlers in Tymal Mills, Matt Parkinson and Reece Topley, which left them short on batting depth down the order and Buttler could choose to rectify that by bringing Phil Salt into the side and dropping one of the quicker bowlers in Mills or Topley.
- Both David Willey and Richard Gleeson also missed out on selection in the first T20i and whilst Gleeson offers a second right-arm pace option alongside Chris Jordan, Willey would provide an alternate batting option to go with his skiddy left-arm bowling.
INDIA
- Rohit Sharma became the first ever captain to win 13 consecutive T20i matches on Thursday as his India team racked up 198/8 before a wonderful bowling performance saw them ruthlessly snuff out any hopes of a successful England run chase, dismissing the likes of Buttler and Liam Livingstone for scores of 0.
- Rohit now has a very welcome dilemma with Test players Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant all back available for selection, but the Indian skipper isn’t likely to make wholesale changes following such a strong showing.
- After a disappointing showing behind the stumps, Dinesh Karthik is expected to give up the gloves to Pant and could well lose his place in the starting lineup altogether despite his abilities as a finisher with the bat with competition for places so intense.
THE PREDICTION
As well as they played in the opening T20i of this short three-game series, India won’t relish returning to Edgbaston, the scene of England’s Test match victory over the tourists less than a week ago. Key to India’s win last time out was dismissing England’s key gun batters in Buttler and Livingstone for no runs and not allowing any other players to accumulate a score. The chances of this happening again, particularly on what should be a good pitch at Edgbaston is unlikely when taking into account the strength of England’s batting. Expect a much closer encounter than what we saw on Thursday and whilst India’s incredible winning run under Rohit in T20 cricket cannot be ignored, it’s difficult to write off England on one of their favourite grounds, so consider backing the hosts to level the series.
