Australia beat West Indies by three wickets

  • Australia claimed victory over West Indies by a very narrow margin in the opening T20i between these two nations, chasing down 146 to win with just one ball to spare and only three wickets in hand, with wicket-keeper-batter Matthew Wade’s unbeaten 39 once again demonstrating his importance to Australia down the order in this format.
  • Cameron Green was given the opportunity to open the batting, captain Aaron Finch dropping down the order to number four and following Finch’s crucial 58 in his new position, the experiment is likely to continue here in Brisbane.

  • It was a fantastic collective effort from the West Indies bowling attack to almost defend 145 as five of the six bowlers utilised picked up at least one wicket and provided the batting improves this time round, then the tourists stand a real chance of victory.
  • Yannic Cariah marked his return to T20 cricket with excellent figures of 1/15, an economy rate of just 3.75 as he aims to nail a spot down in the side ahead of the T20 World Cup, but the expected batter friendly pitch at Brisbane will provide him with a tougher challenge to contain his opponents.

A significantly higher scoring affair could be on the cards here at Brisbane Cricket Ground and this is likely to suit the Australians, who contain a formidable looking batting line-up. This was shown in the first match of the series as despite losing seven wickets, the depth of the team carried them home. West Indies on paper, do not contain such quality down the order and Australia’s firepower should see them home to victory.
