THE LOWDOWN

ZIMBABWE

  • It was expected that Zimbabwe were put up a real challenge against India on their home patch when taking into account their recent form, but alas it wasn’t to be the case as the hosts were heavily beaten in the first ODI.
  • Improvement across the board must be the priority as they were bowled out for just 189 but failed to even gain a single wicket in response, so it’s crucial that they bowl with more potency this time round to have any chance.

INDIA

  • India once again flexed their white ball muscle in terms of squad depth, thrashing Zimbabwe by ten wickets with a number of players starring who are not guaranteed selections in the first choice ODI starting XI for when the Cricket World Cup comes along next year.
  • Shubman Gill put his hand up by scoring 82 not out in an unbroken partnership of 192 with Shikhar Dhawan, who made 81 not out, whilst bowler Deepak Chahar ripped apart the Zimbabwean top order, taking three of the opening four wickets.

THE PREDICTION

The tourists aren’t seen as an excellent side for nothing and they proved on Thursday that no matter what starting XI they field, India pose formidable opposition to any nation. Zimbabwe had a match to forget and the expectation is that they will improve in the second ODI match, but whether it is enough to triumph will be another matter. This India team just look too strong at this present time and have to be favoured to gain another victory which would give them an unassailable 0-2 series lead.
