ZIMBABWE
- Zimbabwe were bowled out after just 28.5 overs of their run chase against Bangladesh in the first ODI, finishing on just 121/9 with all-run Timycen Maruma not batting due to an injury sustained in the field.
- The batting of Zimbabwe was not strong enough to challenge Bangladesh and the test match between the two sides and those struggles continued in this ODI, although wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva showed signs of promise with a half-century.
- Maruma is likely to miss out in the second ODI following his injury, whilst debutants Dion Myers and opener Tadiwanashe Marumani should both keep their places in the team.
BANGLADESH
- Bangladesh will hope that their emphatic victory in the first ODI sets the tone for the rest of the series, after a score of 276/9 batting first proved far too much for Zimbabwe’s fragile batting line-up to chase
- Wicketkeeping in place of the absent Mushfiqur Rahim, Liton Das shone with the bat, racking up 102 after his opening partner Tamim Iqbal was dismissed for a duck, whilst all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan picked up a five-wicket-haul, becoming Bangladesh’s all-time leading ODI wicket taker in the process.
- After such a dominant performance, it would be a surprise if Bangladesh feel the need to adjust anything for the second ODI, with captain Tamim expected to name an unchanged side.
THE PREDICTION
Zimbabwe didn’t give themselves any chance of chasing down a stiff total in the first ODI after losing wickets at regular intervals and the majority of their batting line-up simply haven’t looked capable of standing up to an experienced Bangladesh bowling attack led by the evergreen Shakib. The hosts are far too reliant on experienced captain Brendan Taylor for runs and if he is to be dismissed before he can accumulate a big score as he was in the first ODI, then another Bangladesh victory looks inevitable with the tourists’ batting already having had the better of the Zimbabwe bowlers throughout the tour so far.
