WEST INDIES
- West Indies’ fighting spirit cannot be questioned following their admirable attempt to chase down 309 runs to win the opening ODI, but after a brave battle and never say die attitude from their lower order in particular, the hosts fell just short.
- Whilst the bowling took plenty of punishment, the Windies can be delighted with the performance of their batting line-up with a number of contributions throughout the order and with that in mind, it is unlikely to be adjusted ahead of this second match.
- Captain Nicholas Pooran said after the game that it “felt like a win for us” and unless any late niggles have occurred behind the scenes it would be a surprise if West Indies’ starting XI was adjusted following such a promising showing last time out with all-rounder Jason Holder absent due to Covid-19.
INDIA
- India’s top order laid the foundations for their success in the first ODI, with their two openers Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill alongside number three Shreyas Iyer contributing 215 of their 308 runs batting first, with captain Dhawan making 97.
- Gill especially will be very happy with making 64 as his place is arguably the most competitive among this touring Indian squad with the 22-year-old given the nod over the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ishan Kishan, but his knock should see Gill keep his place here.
- Ravindra Jadeja is not expected to recover from a knee problem in time to take his place in the team for the second ODI, therefore fellow left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel will likely gain another opportunity to impress.
THE PREDICTION
West Indies deserve major credit for the way they stuck to their task against India in the first ODI and the signs of progress are obvious. However, it’s important to note that this is very much a second-strong India team, which only serves to underline their incredible strength-in-depth across both white-ball formats of the game. Whilst both batting line-ups performed well last time out, India boast that sprinkling of world class with the ball in players such as Yuzvendra Chahal and Mohammed Siraj that West Indies don’t have in comparison. When taking this into account, it’s hard to look beyond the tourists making it back-to-back wins here in Port of Spain.
