WEST INDIES
- Not long after West Indies’ comprehensive 0-3 ODI series defeat at the hands of Bangladesh earlier this month, Nicholas Pooran’s side welcome India to Port of Spain for three more 50 over fixtures, all of which will take place on the same ground.
- Experienced all-rounder Jason Holder’s return to the squad provides a big boost for the Windies, as the 30-year-old was clearly missed significantly against Bangladesh and he will likely replace Romario Shepherd, who has been dropped.
- After playing just one game across the three-match series loss at the hands of the Tigers, bowler Anderson Phillip has also missed out on squad selection.
INDIA
- Shikhar Dhawan captains the India squad for this ODI series and with regular skipper Rohit Sharma being afforded a rest, Dhawan will be opening the batting with a different partner, who is expected to be Ishan Kishan.
- Virat Kohli has also been taken out of the firing line and given a well-earned rest which all of Indian cricket will be hoping serves as the break Kohli needs for him to return to form following an extremely lean patch.
- India’s potent ODI fast bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have also been given breaks as has wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant, so Kishan could also take the gloves should he be selected to play.

ODI cricket has proven a negative issue for West Indies for an extended period of time now, as they have lost each of their last six games and won just four matches across the year. Things don’t get any easier for them here, especially when taking into account the strength-in-depth among the Indian white-ball player pool which will be on show in all its glory across these ODI fixtures. Even when you factor in their rested players, this India squad covers all bases and they have to be favoured to win this opening ODI against a side low on confidence in this format of the game.
