THE TEAM NEWS

SRI LANKA

  • A score of 262/9 looked a decent one for Sri Lanka at the interval, until India came out to bat and chased it down inside 37 overs to take victory in the first ODI.
  • Key to the defeat was that no Sri Lankan batter went on to record at least a half-century and lay the foundations for a total of 300 plus, despite six batters accruing scores of 24 or more.
  • The hosts continue to struggle without suspended trio Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Mendis and Danushka Gunathilaka, whilst captain Dasun Shanaka may look at changing round the bowling line-up after India made such easy work of their victory target, with only Wanindu Hasaranga bowling with an economy rate of under six runs an over.

INDIA

  • There is plenty to be buoyant about from an Indian perspective, as their largely young side proved their capabilities on the international stage, despite the absence of many regular white ball stars.
  • Captain Shikhar Dhawan led his team admirably with an unbeaten 86, whilst fellow opener Prithvi Shaw smashed 43 from just 21 balls and number three batter Ishan Kishan hit 59 on his ODI debut.
  • India are not likely to change their side with no injuries reported, especially when taking into account the strong all-round performance of their bowling attack with the spin-duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav taking two wickets each working in tandem.

THE PREDICTION

The depth within India’s limited overs ranks bodes extremely well for them going forward and the fearlessness about how they went about their business in the first ODI was particularly impressive. Sri Lanka are really struggling at present, with their batting once again a huge disappointment. Despite a lack of international experience within the Indian squad, their batting in particular still has an explosive edge, combined with the experience of Dhawan that Sri Lanka simply cannot seem to compete against at present. With that in mind, another win for India looks on the cards in this second ODI.
