THE TEAM NEWS

SRI LANKA

  • Following an impressive run chase to secure a consolation win over Australia in the third T20i, Sri Lanka have some momentum behind them which they can take into this upcoming ODI series.
  • Under-19 World Cup captain Dunith Wellalage has been named in the Sri Lankan squad and the young all-rounder could make his senior international debut in this first ODI..
  • A number of experienced players have also also been called up such as Danushka Gunathilaka, Niroshan Dickwella and Dhananjaya de Silva.

AUSTRALIA

  • Australia took the spoils in the three-match T20i series, winning it by two games to one and will be looking to do exactly the same across the five ODIs.
  • Fast bowler Mitchell Starc and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh will both miss the game on Tuesday, Starc due to a finger injury and Marsh a calf problem.
  • Leg-spin bowler Adam Zampa remains absent due to paternity leave, so Mitchell Swepson is likely to get a game in his place whilst injury also rules out Kane Richardson.

THE PREDICTION

Australia’s biggest worry heading into this first ODI are their injuries particularly within the bowling department. However, this is where bringing such a vast contingent of players on tour with them will reap its rewards with captain Aaron Finch and coach Andrew McDonald able to call upon players from the touring A squad as cover. Sri Lanka’s batters will see this as an opportunity for them to try and capitalise on facing a depleting visiting bowling unit, but they are still set to face a formidable pack which includes the likes of Pat Cummins and Josh Hazelwood. When it comes to batting, Australia boasts a far stronger top order compared to that of Sri Lanka and this should ultimately drive the tourists to victory in this first ODI of the series.
