THE TEAM NEWS
IRELAND
- Just over 40 overs of play were possible in the first ODI between these two sides after Ireland were put into bat by South Africa, with the hosts 195/4 before the rain arrived curtailed the match.
- Despite the weather, Ireland can take a real positive from their batting performance against a strong South African side, with opener William Porterfield scoring 63 and captain Andrew Balbirnie hitting 65.
- No changes are expected to be made to the Ireland team for this match with the bowlers fully fit and high on energy levels having not been required in the first ODI.
SOUTH AFRICA
- South Africa never got the opportunity to chase down what would likely have been a competitive total from Ireland on Sunday when considering the home side’s position when the two teams were brought off by the umpires
- No Proteas bowlers shone in terms of their economy rate, however there were two wickets for right arm fast bowler Kagiso Rabada, whilst Andile Phehlukwayo and spin-bowler Tabraiz Shamsi picked up a wicket each.
- Both fast bowler Anrich Nortje and in-form wicketkeeper batter Quinton de Kock were rested for the first ODI and, whilst Nortje may be in line for a recall here, the latter is expected to once again be given a rest when considering that none of the South African batting line-up got any time at the crease in the last game.
THE PREDICTION
The first ODI was finely poised before the weather intervened and the key for Ireland is whether they can continue their promising batting performance in the second match of the series. South Africa will have been disappointed not to have taken more wickets after winning the toss and a reaction will be expected from the Proteas bowlers. In Rabada, alongside Ngidi and the spin-bowling duo of Maharaj and Shamsi, South Africa will be expected to restrict Ireland to a subpar score in the second ODI. Providing they can do so, then their batting line-up even if they are without the services of De Kock should be strong enough to dominate the Irish bowlers, leading to a Proteas win and a series lead.
