THE TEAM NEWS
ENGLAND
- It looked as if England were staring on the brink of a series defeat after only scoring 201 after being asked to bat first in the second ODI in what was a rain reduced 29-overs-a-side clash due to rain, however a magnificent bowling performance from the first ball of the chase saw the hosts take a clatter of early wickets and ultimately win emphatically.
- Reece Topley returned to the side and picked up where he left off against India with two crucial early wickets and will have a big part to play in this deciding match with his left arm seam.
- England will be without fast bowler Brydon Carse for the final ODI due to a bruised toe, which increases the likelihood of them naming an unchanged side to the one which triumphed in Manchester.
SOUTH AFRICA
- South Africa’s batting collapsed in dramatic fashion on Friday after what appeared to be a good effort restricting England to just 2021, as they found themselves 6/4 before eventually being bowled out for just 83.
- Concussion rules out bowler Andre Phehlukwayo once again and despite the Proteas’ terrible batting collapse, it would be no surprise if they don’t make any changes and give the players a chance to make up for their batting surrender last time out.
- If they are to win, South Africa cannot solely rely on Rassie van der Dussen for runs and need other players at the top of the order to contribute such as Quinton de Kock, who has made just 24 runs across the series so far.
THE PREDICTION
England were significantly stronger at Emirates Old Trafford compared to the team fielded in Durham with the presence of players such as Topley and David Willey with both giving the home side a point of difference with the ball. Question marks remain over England’s batting line-up however, but no one can deny its depth and this saved them on Tuesday when South Africa had them 72/5 and 101/6 respectively. It is this strength-in-depth which should serve them well once again at Clean Slate Headingley, which could also prove a low-scoring affair with forecasts of a cloudy day and potential rain disruptions. England though, have to be backed to edge what should be a closer contest than that of the second ODI when taking into account home advantage and their more reliable lower order.
