THE TEAM NEWS
ENGLAND
- England’s patchy white ball form across this English summer continued in their opening ODI against South Africa as they were comprehensively beaten by 62, a disappointing end to Ben Stokes’ ODI career as he was dismissed for just 5.
- The hosts are likely to replace Stokes with David Willey in this second match of the series, although Phil Salt could be an option if England wish to opt for a specialist batter, but he plays primarily at the top of the order and would likely force a batting reshuffle.
- Left-arm seamer Reece Topley was afforded a rest at Chester-le-Street following his excellent performances across the series against India and he is expected to come back into the side.
SOUTH AFRICA
- South Africa surprised many with the dominance of their victory up in Durham after racking up 333/5 batting first before holding their nerve with the ball following a strong start from England, ultimately bowling the hosts out for 271.
- Rassie van der Dussen’s wonderful ODI record with the bat continued as he struck a magnificent 134 from 117 balls whilst Anrich Nortje starred with the ball, picking up four wickets.
- When taking into account the nature of their victory, it would be a surprise if South Africa were to alter their starting line-up as they aim to seal the series at Emirates Old Trafford with a game to spare.
THE PREDICTION
England have plenty of questions to answer regarding their ODI side, especially now that Stokes has departed the scene and must respond here with the series on the line. Topley coming back into the team is extremely likely and should prove a big boost for the hosts in terms of the bowling, so South Africa are expected to find it much more difficult to score as well as they did on Tuesday. Jos Buttler’s side bat deep and should respond positively as they did in the second ODI against India after losing at the Kia Oval. Therefore, consider backing an England victory to level the series.
