THE TEAM NEWS
ENGLAND
- England bounced back emphatically from their beating at the Kia Oval, by dishing out a thrashing of their own at Lord’s, bowling India out for just 146 after they had scored 246 themselves on a pitch difficult to bat on.
- The day belonged to left-arm seam bowler Reece Topley, who took the best figures by an England player in an ODI, gaining 6/24 including the wickets of openers Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan.
- Having released Phil Salt, Matt Parkinson and Harry Brook to their counties for T20 Blast Finals Day, all three are not expected to feature in this third ODI which takes place the following day, meaning that England will likely name an unchanged side.
INDIA
- India looked to have restricted England to a chaseable target in 246, but the tourists’ innings never got going due to some brilliantly disciplined bowling from England and they ended up not getting close to their victory target.
- Rohit Sharma’s side are likely to reassess their approach to chasing such targets rather than react by making wholesale changes and if they are batting second in this third ODI, expect a more aggressive start to their innings.
- With Virat Kohli set to be rested from his side’s tour of the West Indies, this match at Emirates Old Trafford represents his last chance to find some much needed form for a period of time.
THE PREDICTION
The stage is set for what will be a snorter of a contest which decides this three-match ODI series at Emirates Old Trafford. Both England and India have each secured an emphatic victory, but this deciding encounter is not expected to be as one-sided as the previous two ODIs. England have momentum in their favour, but India will play the role of the wounded animal ready to strike back as their opponents did so strongly at Lord’s. However, there may be a few more question marks within the Indian batting, especially when taking into account the form of Kohli as well as Rishabh Pant failing to replicate his Test match scoring in the limited overs game as of yet. Combine this with England having home advantage in their favour and it looks like the shrewd play would be to back Jos Buttler’s side to narrowly overcome their opponents.
